Instruments of scientific governance? Historical geographies of Halley Bay, 1956-present

Using newly catalogued archival material on the British Antarctic research station Halley Bay dating from the 1950s Iwish to explore the institutional, political and technical dimensions of Cold War British field science with a focus onpractices related to geomagnetic mapping. I wish to relate my findings to historiographical and theoretical debatesemerging from the environmental humanities about the relative primacy of human social and natural material forces indiscussing environmental issues.
