The PhD project 'Quantifying and abating greenhouse gas emissions from large wastewater treatment plants' is an industrial-academic collaboration between Newcastle University and Northumbrian Water Limited. The project contributes to the 'Race to Net Carbon Zero' commitment by many private and public organizations. The work will characterize the emissions of greenhouse gases by Waste Water Treatment Plants (WWTPs) using a combination of direct measurements and bioreactor-scale laboratory measurements. The student will be trained how to conduct the gas analyses according to Best Practice guidelines to facilitate comparison with independent measurements and place the measurements within the broader context of greenhouse gas budgets. Overall, the project is an excellent opportunity to develop analytical skills for application in the industrial workplace and contribute to an improvement in waste water treatment processes by achieving carbon neutrality.
