The cultural legacy of Paralympic media in Peru: Lessons from the Global South

This research will explore the potential of Paralympic media to disrupt entrenched, stigmatizing disability narratives and accelerate disability justice through analyzing the political emotions and the social impact that media coverage of the Paralympic Games (especially Rio 2016) and Parapan American Games (hosted by Peru in 2019) has had on the lives of disabled people in Peru. The collaboration between the Loughborough University work on Paralympic media and the Global Disability Innovation GDI Hub work on disability stigma will be key to engage different stakeholders throughout the research and amplify the findings, conclusions and recommendations emerging from this research. This piece aims to contribute both disability advocacy, and, disability scholarship by conducting co-creative research with organizations of persons with disabilities in Peru and to produce a toolkit to engage persons with disabilities in the creation of content of inclusive Paralympic media.
