Tackling the fatty liver by targeting the gut

英国超过60%的成年人超重，33%的人患有脂肪肝，肥胖症在英国非常普遍。不良的饮食习惯(西方饮食)可能是导致肝脏脂肪变性的因素，但也有更广泛的影响，包括肠道微生物群组成的深刻变化和与肠道通透性增加相关的屏障功能受损。本项目的目的是提高我们对脂肪肝和随后炎症的中介机制的理解。这将有助于提出潜在的目标，以保护肠道和肝脏的健康，并防止与不良饮食习惯相关的疾病进展，这将在本项目中进行调查。

Obesity has epidemic proportions in the UK as more than 60% of adults are overweighted and 33% have fatty liver. Poor dietary habits (western diets) are the may contributors to liver steatosis but also have broader effects, including profound changes in the gut microbiome composition and impaired barrier function associated with increased permeability of the intestine.The aim of this project is to improve our understanding of the mechanisms mediating the development of a fatty liver and the subsequent inflammation. This will enable the proposal of potential targets to preserve gut-liver health and prevent disease progression associated to poor dietary habits, which will be investigated in this project.
