Unmasking Janet Flanner: New Journalism and the Politics of Anti-Communism at the New Yorker

This transnational, interdisciplinary, feminist recovery project explores how the "Lavender Scare", theCold War persecution of gays and lesbians by the US government, impacted citizens beyond nationalsecurity borders. It will investigate how "morality purges" extended into the world of Arts and Letters.Using Janet Flanner, author of the popular "Letter from Paris" for the New Yorker magazine as a casestudy, I will analyse how artists and intellectuals were simultaneously tyrannised for non-conformingbeliefs and identities, while also being used as instruments of the US government in the Cultural ColdWar. Drawing together vital evidence from Flanner's published work and private records, the NewYorker's vast archive, and US and French government sources, I will examine how Flanner strategicallyresponded to these constraints by developing a style of writing that closely aligns with New Journalism, agenre attributed to a male-dominated canon which emerged over a decade later.
