Resisting the algorithm: exploring the performance of everyday algorithmic resistance in contemporary society.

Suggesting that algorithms are everywhere in a modern, neoliberal society is a matter of stating theobvious. They are increasingly embedded in everyday life, utilised to make decisions in finance (Allen, 2020), education (The Verge, 2020), justice and law (Eubanks, 2017) as well as advertising and marketing(Benjamin, 2019). Algorithms, therefore, seem to have bled into every aspect of culture through their facility to give parameters to what we are able to do, see, and ultimately, think. This project departs from the prevailing focus on algorithmic design and its effects, as seen in the critical literature, and builds upon an aperture first identified in my MA dissertation (74) to ask: what forms of resistance to algorithms are emerging in contemporary society?
