The Role of Play in Fostering Placemaking

Playful urban spaces allow people to connect with these spaces and is an indicator of an energized urban space and successful placemaking. However, there is a lack of understanding about people's experiences of places and play in the field of urban design and built environment. With play being identified as a primary creative force in forming new realities, more research is needed to investigate urban space as a platform for placemaking. It is important for public bodies such as community planning and land use planning systems, to work on creating welcoming and safe spaces for the people and children to gather and play near their community. Therefore, this research will aim to understand how appropriation of playability through urban design could foster placemaking in urban public spaces. This research will follow three main stages. The first stage, which is the literature review, will explore definitions of playability, playable city, and urban play; to create a list of criteria to clarify its scope. The second stage will start with a survey to allocate urban spaces in which people enjoy and like to visit and spend time there. These spaces will then be briefly visited and analyzed in order to choose the appropriate case studies that will be used in the analysis stage. The third stage will comprise mainly interviews and observations to identify how the appropriation of playability through urban design could foster placemaking in urban public spaces.
