This project explores the theory of nineteenth-century musical form through the case study of 'Breakthrough': an interruptive event that critically alters a symphony's formal and expressive narratives. Analysing a corpus of symphonies from Beethoven to Sibelius, it develops a robust theoretical account, which facilitates exploration of the music-analytical and extra-musical concerns that Breakthrough engenders. Comprehending Breakthrough's confluence of technical and expressive factors, moreover, necessitates a scholarly practice that engages contemporary questions of music theory's broader cultural-political relevance. This research therefore contributes vitally both to the theory of nineteenth-century form and to debates about its wider role in musicological scholarship.
