My PhD will make a major contribution to how we understand British art of the1960s: rather than viewing the 'Royal College Style' as a local form of Pop Art, it willrestore the early works of six British artists to their rightful place within the decade'sinternational cultural vanguard.The project has the following research questions:1. Why is Pop Art a problematic framework for understanding the 'Royal CollegeStyle'?2. How did the form and style of Royal College works suggest radical new modesof picture-making?3. How did the content of Royal College works raise critical issues of gender,sexuality, and post-colonial politics?4. Within which international contexts did exhibitions place and interpret the RoyalCollege Style?
