This PhD project will develop an advanced manufacturing process for the creation of high-value ceramic components. Ceramics play a critical role in many industries, particularly where components must operate reliably in harsh conditions, such as extreme pressures/temperatures, mechanical loads, abrasive environments or high voltages. Additive Manufacturing of ceramics facilitates customisation and new design freedoms but at present is limited to single material parts. Using a hybrid additive manufacturing approach, we will develop the capability to selectively print discrete ceramic materials and enable the creation of functionally graded structures. The novel manufacturing process and material formulations developed through this studentship will unlock new device capabilities covering integrated fabrication of harsh environment electronics, metamaterial structures and instrumented medical implants. Due to the broad range of beneficiaries the technology will support future collaborations and high impact publications across manufacturing, materials, healthtech, automotive, chemical processing, sensors, communications and robotics. The approach will allow sustainable manufacturing through an energy efficient low waste process and the process will facilitate zero defect manufacturing. Project Objectives:- Build a multilateral ceramic hybrid additive manufacturing platform- Develop a tool path generator to control the hybrid manufacturing platform- Formulate ceramic and metallic pastes that have the required rheological properties for printing - Build and test novel ceramic multimaterial demonstrators that will showcase the benefits of this new process.
