The project will investigate:To what extent British volunteers of Jewish descent motivated to serve in #Spain because they were secular socialists or were they influenced by an increasing sense of Jewish identity brought about by rising antisemitism, Nazism and fascism. To what extent do the motives of BRitish volunteers of Jewish descent fall between the poles of ideological drives and the impetus from a Jewish ethnic identity. While recognising British Jewry was not a homogenous identity, how successful was the CPGB in engaging the support of British Jews for anti-fascist struggle both at home and in Spain. To what extent were British volunteers of Jewish descent able to forge their own polotical culture.
