Women, Shakespeare and Asian Cinemas

This thesis investigates the ways in which Asian cinemas represent, reimagine and repurpose Shakespeare's women. What does it mean when archetypes of English Renaissance womanhood are taken up and variously adapted across Asia (understood as China/Hong Kong, India, Japan, Korea, Taiwan and Thailand)? Ranging across national/transnational histories of cinema and industrial contexts, the thesis will be the first study of how Shakespeare's women signify in this part of the world. Including analysis of women directors/practitioners, and consideration of non-binary identities, the thesis argues that adaptation is always local and tied to particular familial, racial, religious and socio-economic circumstances and geographies.
