This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. This study is to determine if a newly developed experimental drug (COL-3) can reduce the levels of tissue destructive enzymes and bone breakdown products in the tiny amount of fluid that leaks out of the tissue around the teeth. Periodontal (gum) disease causes inflammation (reddening and bleeding) of the gums and can result in tooth loss. COL-3 is an experimental new drug derived from a commonly used drug called "tetracycline"which has been used in the treatment of periodontal (gum) disease.
