英文摘要
This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The purpose of this study is to determine if the drug Periostat will reduce periodontal disease in persons with Type I diabetes. Periodontal disease causes inflammation of the gums and can result in tooth loss. Periostat is a drug that has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration for the use in the treatment of periodontal disease in non-diabetic persons. It has been shown that when the drug is used, along with standard tooth and root cleaning, non-diabetic patients have greater improvement in their gum disease than patients treated only with tooth and root cleaning. Once the study is concluded we should know if the drug Periostat is useful for the treatment of periodontal disease and whole body inflammation in persons with Type I diabetes.
