This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The Women's Interagency HIV Study (WIHS) is a longitudinal, multicenter study funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to investigate the impact of HIV infection in women. The WIHS collaborative study group includes six clinical consortia in Bronx/Manhattan, Brooklyn, Chicago, Washington, DC, San Francisco Bay Area, and Los Angeles/Hawaii. Participants infected with or at risk for HIV were enrolled in the WIHS between October 1, 1994 and November 15, 1995 after being recruited from HIV primary care and hospital-based clinics, research programs, community outreach sites, support groups, drug rehabilitation programs, HIV testing sites, and referrals from enrolled participants. An additionally 1000 women were enrolled between 2001 and 2002. The Mt. Sinai WIHS is a subsite of the NYC/Bronx WIHS Consortium which also includes Montefiore Medical Center. The purpose of WIHS is to study the interrelationship among HIV infection, environmental factors, and host genetic factors determining disease course and and survival in a heterogeneous population of women. The WIHS includes multisite and core studies and siet-specific substudies. One such substudy is the Cardiovascular Substudy. The specific aims of the WIHS Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) Substudy relate to subclinical atherosclerosis, CVD risk factors, and CVD events among HIV-infected and HIV at-risk women. The study is longitudinal observational study to compare rates of progression of sub-clinical atherosclerosis, assessed using serial measures of carotid artery IMT, among HIV negative women, HIV-positive women not using HAART, and HIV-positive women using HAART for at least the past six months.
