PHYSIOLOGICAL SIGNATURE OF CACHEXIA FOR DETECTION AND THERAPUTIC MONITORING

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The purpose of this research study is to measure and characterize the physiological properties of cachexic muscle tissues using broadband diffuse optical spectroscopy (DOS). Cachexia is the condition where tissues waste away without an active attempt to loose weight, and occurs in some patients with specific types of cancer. In order to understand how to better diagnose and treat cachexia, we must first understand the mechanisms behind the wasting away of tissues. This is a pliot study, the first of its kind, to investiage specific physiological signatures of cachexic muscle tissues. the goal will be to (1) improve diagnoisis of cachexia, and (b) monitor response of tissues to theraputic intervention
