Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is the most common complication in very low birth weight (VLBW) newborns, and is diagnosed in about 15,000 infants in the U.S. BPD results in lifelong pulmonary disabilities and is associated with neurodevelopmental deficits. The IL-1/IL-17 axis has been shown to be a critical mechanism involved in the development of lung inflammation in these VLWB preterm babies.
