PATHOGENICITY OF A NEWLY IDENTIFIED HUMAN PARVOVIRUS

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Objective: Human Parvovirus 4 (PARV4) is a newly identified virus. The high seroconversion rates among adults suggests that this virus is very prevalent, and probably of low pathogenicity in persons with a normal immune system. However, there are doubts whether this virus causes symptoms in immunocompromised individuals. To determine whether a non-human primate model can be developed for PARV4, juvenile rhesus macaques were inoculated with PARV4-containing human plasma; one animal was also depleted of CD8+ cells prior to virus inoculation.
