英文摘要
Overview:
Developing a robust biodefense research program will require the interactions of scientist and clinicians
of diverse research interests. Focused education of students, post-doctoral fellows, and faculty to
increase their understanding of the human immunology, microbial pathogenesis, and vaccine
development will be a critical component of such a program if it is to be sustained. This educational
program will utilize several approaches to achieve this goal, including the development of program for
technical training of students, post-doctoral fellows, and faculty, the use of existing relevant courses and
seminar series, the development of a new seminar series focused on Human Immunology and
Biodefense, the development of visiting scientist program, and a mechanism to review these activities
every six months.
The heart of the Education Program will be structured around the proposed Technical Research
Resource Development projects and the Research Projects (Table 1, above). Training will be provided
to participants in our Cooperative Center, including graduate and post-doctoral trainees, faculty members
and laboratory staff, in the course of pursuing all research activities related to these projects. We will
also make these opportunities for learning innovative new methods for the analysis of the human
immune response available to trainees and faculty from any Stanford laboratory, or from laboratories
participating in other Cooperative Centers for Translational Research on Human Immunology and
Biodefense. This opportunity will be publicized by an announcement through a distribution list of
investigators at all center, to be obtained from the NIAID Program Officer. Each of the laboratories
involved will be asked to identify one or two individuals who will be involved in the training for a particular
technique. Although the potential time commitment involved in such training may vary, depending on the
particular technique's popularity (e.g., currently there is a great interest in MHC tetramer-related
technologies), we anticipate that the this time will constitute nor more than 10% of their total working
hours per year. In most cases training will be carried out by highly experienced research technicians,
rather than students or post-doctoral fellows, to avoid potential interference with educational or research
pursuits. Any internal requests for this training and their scheduling will be evaluated on a weekly basis,
and scheduled quickly, typically within a two week period. Outside requests will be scheduled within a
month. This longer lead time will be necessary to be certain that there are no time conflicts with internal
trainees. Depending on the technique, the maximum time involved in training is estimated as 8-10 hours.
