STUDIES IN INFANTS FOR THE IMMUNOPATHOGENSIS OF T1D

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Type One Diabetes (T1D) affects 0.4% of the population. Efforts to prevent disease are stymied by inability to accurately diagnose individuals at high risk for disease. Thus, studies of biomarkers of risk are badly needed. However, such studies require large numbers of subjects that cannot be recruited from a single site. This pilot study is proposing to 1) recruit unaffected first degree relatives of T1D patients and healthy controls to study biomarkers of risk and 2) study T1D subjects for risk factors of progression of complications of disease. Due to the large number of subjects required for such a study, this pilot proposes to use the framework of the CTSA planning grant to recruit subjects from MUSC, USC, and MCG.
