This request is made for funds to purchase a blood gas / electrolyte analyzer capable of analyzing biological fluids and physiological solutions for gas and ion concentrations. The analyzer is urgently needed by two NSERC-funded researchers in the applicant's building, and would also be periodically used by other researchers in the Departments of Human Health / Nutritional Sciences and the Dept. of Animal and Poultry Science. This equipment would replace an aging, now obsolete and difficult / expensive to maintain Nova Statprofile 9 analyzer - the annual operating costs of which now exceed the purchase price of a new state-of-the-art analyzer. The new analyzer will substantially enhance the research of both Lindinger and McBride by facilitating throughput and providing rapid and precise analysis of samples from human and animal experimentation. The equipment would specifically be used by the applicants, post-docs and graduate students (several) working in the applicants' labs - learning how to use this equipment and processing samples for analysis comprises an important part of the training of these people.
