The proposed research aims at developing an electric all-terrain vehicle (ATV). ATVs are used mainly by avid sportsmen for recreation, which involves fast acceleration and high speed, or by other users such as farmers and park patrols for short but frequent trips, which require repeated stops and long durations of engine idling. An electric version of an ATV drive-train can eliminate harmful engine emissions and noise in the latter type of applications while still providing fast acceleration required by the first group of users. Meanwhile it will improve the overall comfort of the vehicle. The proposed research involves development of computer models for the mechanical and electrical components of the ATV. The models will be used to study the performance of the proposed drive train and to optimize the control circuitry. The developed electrical drive train will then be implemented in an actual ATV. The project will investigate the applicability of transient simulation models for the design of a complex system and will use laboratory and field test results to validate the simulation-based design.
