Key to chemical biology is purity of materials, whether for the design of new peptide/protein-modified hydrogels, drug colloids, or metal-chelating polymers. The high pressure liquid chromatograph (HPLC) allows both biomolecules to be purified and polymerization reaction kinetics to be quantified. The HPLC is critical to success in the advanced research being pursued by the laboratories of Molly Shoichet, Mitchell Winnik and Brian Shoichet. In the combined laboratories, there are 70 highly qualified personnel who will benefit directly from the HPLC, plus another 100+ researchers in our collaborators' laboratories. Importantly, the proposed HPLC has become a mainstay of the modern laboratory as reflected in the multi-disciplinary research proposed by principal investigators from three distinct faculties: Applied Science & Engineering (MS Shoichet), Arts & Science (MA Winnik) and Pharmaceutical Sciences (BK Shoichet). With limited access to other HPLC instruments on campus and the near standstill to which the laboratory was taken when an old HPLC was non-functional this past summer, it is clear that the HPLC has a significant impact on the pace of research. The information obtained from the HPLC will allow us to advance our knowledge-based economy, particularly in the fields of immunoassays, cell delivery and drug formulations. This is clear from our multiple points of contact and collaboration with industry in Canada and worldwide. Commercialization of MA Winnik's metal-chelating polymers has been demonstrated with an Ontario-based company; CCRM, in collaboration with a large pharmaceutical company, has an option to license one of MS Shoichet's inventions and is interested in having access to this HPLC, thereby further strengthening our ties to Canadian industry.
