Optical broadband infrastructures for wired and wireless area networks

This three-year Strategic Project is concerned with the design and development of fiber-fed 60-GHz and ultra-wideband (UWB) wireless access techniques that are integrated into the wired digital coherent fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) networks. FTTH optical network topologies will be investigated, including point-to-point and point-to-multipoint architectures. A full duplex point to point and point to multipoint architecture for converged FTTH/UWB and FTTH/60-GHz networks will be demonstrated. Semiconductor laser arrays based on an equivalent chirp technology will be fabricated to improve the performance and reduce the total cost of the system. Air interface design will be studied to improve transmission performance and over all link budget. The new knowledge generated from this project and the training of highly qualified personnel associated to the different stages of this work will certainly contribute to enhance Canada's global competitiveness, especially in high-technology sectors.
