Robots are promising to soon enter society into public spaces such as schools and museums, into hospitals as assistants, and even into homes. Research is increasingly showing how everyday people treat such robots as social entities, attributing them with intentions and emotions. Developing robotic algorithms and interfaces that will have to work with the general public will require a deeper understanding of how and why people treat robots as social entities, and how robots fit into these social situations.
