A complete MR-compatible EEG system will enable neuroscience researchers at Western University to combine the superior temporal resolution of electroencephalography (EEG) with the high spatial resolution of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). This system will allow us to: 1) extend our funded research programs that seek to better diagnose residual cognitive function after severe brain injury in both adults and neonates 2) augment our funded cognitive studies of beat perception, attention switching and abstract concepts by allowing the simultaneous acquisition of EEG and fMRI data 3) open up new research opportunities aimed at uncovering the neural mechanisms of the role of sleep for learning and memory. The study of the functional significance of sleep is crucial in order to understand the impact of sleep loss, sleep disruption and of sleep disorders, which in North America, has reached epidemic proportions. One in five Canadians suffers from sleep loss, wreaking havoc on society's productivity, safety, physical and mental health. In brain injured patients and neonates, investigation of sleep using combined EEG-fMRI will allow us to assess the level of residual information processing in these individuals who have limited ability to respond behaviourally, and identify markers of consciousness and potential communication. The research that the requested equipment will allow has the potential to have a high impact in the neurosciences by enabling us to tackle research questions that would otherwise be limited by indirect means of measurement. EEG-fMRI is a novel and relatively new combination of non-invasive techniques with only two other centres in Canada (Montreal), being able to acquire these data during sleep. Thus, this equipment will enable us to conduct cutting-edge research that will undoubtedly garner National and International attention.
