Production of excessive sludge keeps surging in domestic wastewater treatment plants due to increasing human activities. The disposal costs for the sludge ranges from 30-50% of the total operating and maintenance costs in the wastewater treatment plants, and in most cases, the sludge is finally landfilled after dewatering processes. To reduce the disposal costs and improve sustainability of sludge treatment, development of innovative technologies is essential. A Lystek company that owns "Lystek technique" for sludge pre-treatment look at new biotechnologies capable of capturing energy from sludge, such as methane and hydrogen gas, before being landfilled. Such innovative technologies enable us to reduce disposal expenses substantially and improve treatment sustainability through energy recovery. The goal of the proposed research is to assess a new three-stage anaerobic biotechnology integrating dark fermentation, anaerobic membrane bioreactor and microbial electrolysis cell for the recovery of methane and hydrogen gases from sludge. The success of this research will open up a new, sustainable method to sludge treatment and disposal. We can decrease sludge disposal costs significantly in one hand. In the other hand, a renewable energy market from waste biomass (sludge) will be expanded.
