Activated sludge or its modified biological treatment processes primarily have been used in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in Canada. Economical management of WWTPs becomes an important issue, as the number of the facilities increases and their structures become complex. The cost of aeration that provides oxygen molecule as a terminal electron acceptor for aerobic bacteria typically ranges from 25 to 50% of the total operation and maintenance (O & M) costs in WWTPs. Other main costs come from sludge treatment and disposal. For these reasons, the need for energy-efficient wastewater treatment technologies or less-sludge production processes is increasing these days.
