Pressure ulcers are a major burden on the healthcare systems. They are caused by the breakdown of skin due to the build-up of pressure over time, and pressure ulcers are most prevalent in elderly and immobile patients. The total yearly costs associated with pressure ulcers in Canada and the U.S. are approximately $2.1 billion and $12 billion, respectively. One of the populations significantly at risk of developing pressure ulcers are wheelchair users. Despite many recent advances in sitting technologies such as sophisitcated sitting cushions, wheelchairs that enable pressure redistribution by tilting the chair during sitting, and pressure mapping, pressure ulcers remain prevalent and difficult to eradicate.
