英文摘要
My students and I study how hawthorns have evolved. We infer genealogical relationships on the one hand, and on the other we study the particular processes by which these plants reproduce, since they do so both sexually and asexually. These small, weedy trees in the rose family are closely related to saskatoons, apples, and pears, as well as to many ornamental trees and shrubs. What we learn is potentially of benefit to others who grow such trees for their fruit, for the herbal remedies they may provide, or for landscaping purposes. It is likewise potentially useful for people concerned with managing wildlife cover and food sources. Our studies are also part of a program in Canada and worldwide to catalog and understand biodiversity.
