Efficient removal of nutrients, mainly nitrogen and phosphorus, from municipal wastewater has become an important concern because of their being the limiting sources for eutrophication in rivers and lakes with consequent toxicity to fish and other animal populations. Biological nutrient removal (BNR) systems using activated sludge are the core technology of the biological wastewater treatment process for ammonia removal. However, these types of systems are often compromised in Canada during cold winter and high flow (snow melting) seasons.
