A Study of Collaborative Planning and Its Application in Software Customization

Planning is an important activity of human society for its essential role in determining the actions to achieve specific goals, and an important area of research for its influence on the fundamental problem of computational complexity. In a prior study, the NP-hard problem of assembly sequence planning becomes fixed parameter tractable when autonomous planning and human reasoning work together. The proposed research project is going to continue the investigation of planning with human/computer collaboration in a broader sense, aimed at creating a new type of joint intelligence that is power enough to solve problems which have not been possible by either computers or human beings on their own. In a long term, this research will study planning within the framework of information space theory, and apply parameterized complexity analysis to identify the source of complexity so that human reasoning can not only be introduced to assist autonomous processing with complimentary capabilities, but also be directed to the exact point of difficulty so that human involvement can be reduced to the minimum. In the short term, the research will focus on the practical issues of planning in dialogue management, and work on the development of an interactive software system that is capable of producing customized software applications from the line of software products in areas such as E-Commerce.
