Shellfish aquaculture has been identified as a viable and sustainable economic opportunity for coastal communities, where unemployment has risen due to a decline in forestry, fishing and mining industries. The Coastal Shellfish Corporation is majority owned by Coastal First Nations, and has a shellfish hatchery and aquaculture tenures growing scallops, currently employing 27 local residents. The company has a number of broodstock lines from Great Bear Initiatives, and genetic characterization of these populations would facilitate broodstock programs to assist in maintaining genetic diversity of subsequent juveniles. We propose using microsatellite genetic markers to determine population differentiation of 600 individuals, working alongside industry personnel to conduct sampling and to facilitate immediate uptake of the results. Cultured shellfish are a source of high-quality local sustainable seafood, and this project aims to conduct a technical assessment, facilitate broodstock programs and thereby assist in industry sustainability and expansion.
