OTI Lumionics Inc. is a Toronto-based start-up that is focused on the fabrication of organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) for various applications such as desk lamps. The OLED-based lamp does not generate heat and is among the most efficient light sources available on the market. OTI Lumionics would like to expand the potential for their patented chlorinated indium tin oxide (Cl-ITO) substrates, in OLEDs, and in other organic electronic devices by exploring various polymer surface treatments. Increasing the number of potential applications that benefit from this novel technology would increase the interest in Cl-ITO, increase the inherent value and open new market opportunities for OTI Lumionics. The purpose of this Engage Grant is to explore the use of Cl-ITO surfaces for the fabrication of novel interfaces for use in organic electronics and potentially other applications. This will facilitate the exploration of grafting-to and grafting-from polymerization techniques that will chemically tether the polymers of varying functionality to the surface and impart desirable properties to the substrates. This project will result in the fabrication of surfaces with increased tunable functionality that can have significant implication to the electronics/telecommunication industry as well as the biomedical industries, benefiting Ontario and all of Canada.
