Xccepted Technologies Inc. develops wearable technologies related to the healthcare environment. Xccepted's current focus is to reconsider the traditional baby monitor to provide caregivers with information on infants that would aid in their safety and care, as well as assisting in the caregiver's management of the infant's daytime and nighttime sleep cycle. Existing baby monitor products primarily make use of a microphone and/or a web camera to allow observation. Some new entrants into this market space are now adding motion detection and simple heartbeat monitors. However, some evidence suggests that these devices may provide only an approximate indication of infant sleep patterns. Xccepted is applying new technologies of brainwave monitoring to provide realtime data of current infant sleep cycles to caregivers. Xccepted has taken this concept and designed an algorithm that allows the real-time sleep cycle of the infant to be broadcast (audio and visual) to the attending parent/guardian so that they may 'sync' their sleep patterns with the infant. Xccepted has expressed interest in partnering with the Health Design Lab at Emily Carr for research and design around this system. The Health Design Lab's expertise is applying solution-focused, human-centered research methodologies to problems in healthcare. With this project it will consider ways to embed the necessary sensors in a comfortable and safe manner for the infants and will look at how best to present this data to caregivers, allowing them to improve their understanding of their infant's sleep cycles. This is important to caregivers as they may be able to better manage family sleep cycles resulting in lower anxiety and fatigue levels, and a healthier family overall.
