To enhance production, livestock industries such as the raising of poultry, have relied on the use of protein feeds based on fish- or soy-meal. In addition, since the 1950's, antibiotics have been used as dietary supplements to enhance growth and reduce infections. However, with declining fish stocks and environmental concerns due to increased soybean production is leading to growing global concern regarding the sustainability of livestock production. Furthermore, livestock industries are facing increasing public pressure to eliminate the use of so called 'antibiotic growth promoters'. In collaboration with AgriPortein, a global leader in the production of insect-based animal feed, we seek to define the nutritional and antimicrobial potential of black soldier fly larvae.
