Earthquake risks in the eastern and western Canadian cities are very well known. Thus the design of structures with adequate earthquake resistance and the rehabilitation of deficient structures are extremely important in Canada. Steel plate shear wall (SPSW) is a very effective system for resisting lateral loads due to wind and earthquakes, but the system remains less attractive to practicing engineers due to their high strength and the high forces they attract during earthquakes. Use of light-gauge steel shear walls rather than conventional shear walls with thicker hot-rolled infill plate, represents a viable and more economical alternative. Research has shown that welding of a very thin infill plate to relatively thick boundary elements is very challenging, which reduces the appeal of this system. An alternative to attach the thin sheet to boundary beams and columns is to use self-drilling screws. Although this is a simple solution for connecting a light gauge infill plate to a frame, it has not been investigated in the past. Another innovative steel shear wall, which has been introduced recently to improve the panel bearing against extreme events such as fire and explosion, is composite plate shear wall. In composite plate shear wall, concrete panel is provided either on one or both sides of the steel plate to prevent initial buckling of the thin steel plate. Seismic design provisions for light-gauge steel shear walls and composite plate shear walls are not available in Canadian building design codes. This makes it difficult for practicing engineers to select such system for buildings in seismic zones. The objective of this research program is to develop Canadian specific design guidelines for innovative steel shear walls. The proposed research will also contribute to the development of next-generation performance based seismic design guidelines for light-gauge steel shear walls. There is a significant potential for innovation in the proposed research, which will facilitate the use of steel shear walls in seismic zones in Canada. The results from the proposed research will attract practicing engineers, infrastructure owners to select the innovative steel shear walls for the design of earthquake resistant structures.
