The proposed research will advance the utilization of light metals (aluminum and magnesium) within the next generation of light weight automobiles. Specifically, the research will address: (i) the constitutive behavior of magnesium alloys under warm forming conditions, with a new focus on rare earth-alloyed magnesium alloy sheet; (ii) the warm formability of high strength aluminum alloys; and, (iii) the high strain rate (crash) response of aluminum and magnesium sheet with emphasis on operative damage processes and hyperplastic behavior. This research will result in the development of a modeling platform for the simulation of advanced warm forming manufacturing processes and the in-service crashworthiness of light weight automotive components fabricated using magnesium and aluminum alloy sheet. The proposed discovery research represents the core science within a larger suite of industrially-funded projects directed by Professor Worswick. The models arising from the discovery research will see application within large-scale industry-sponsored projects to ensure rapid technology transfer, thus directly impacting the way next generation lightweight, crashworthy vehicles are designed and manufactured. The advanced manufacturing processes and simulation methods stemming from this discovery research will help secure competitive advantage for the Canadian automotive industry and ensure that future light weight vehicles are manufactured within Canada. A total of nine graduate students and post doctoral fellows will be trained over the course of this discovery research program. These young researchers will become skilled in state-of-the-art experimental and analytical techniques within the field of material response to metal forming and impact. Their recruitment within Canadian industry and academe will further enhance Canada's future competitiveness.
