Towards Smart Societies: A Broad Assessment Methodology for Smart Civil Infrastructure

The research will develop a methodology to assess the performance of a medium-sized Canadian municipalityin the context of smart societies. Smart societies in this case is referring to the overlapping concepts of "smart","sustainable", and "resilient" outcomes. This will be completed in collaboration with the industrial partnerOpus International Consultants Limited and include a review and synthesis of the state of the art on the topicssurrounding smart societies; consultations with leading experts in this area, and application to the City ofFredericton, as a pilot medium-sized municipality. The resulting methodology can subsequently be leveragedby the industrial partner to support many Canadian medium-sized municipalities pursuing similar initiatives ofimproving their services and the well-being of their inhabitants by identifying opportunities for improvementthat match with their strategic objectives and technological needs.
