L'agrile du frêne, Agrilus planipennis Fairmaire (AGF), est un coléoptère exotique qui a été découvert pour lapremière fois à l'été 2002 à Détroit (Michigan, E-U) et Windsor (Ontario, Canada). Au Canada, l'AGF seretrouve en Ontario et dans le sud du Québec. Plusieurs millions de frênes ont déjà été perdus et on estime quele coût lié aux dommages causés par cet insecte pourrait atteindre 2001 millions de dollars sur une période de30 ans. GDG Environnement a participé à la mise au point d'une approche de lutte biologique efficace pourréduire les populations de l'AGF. Cependant, un facteur essentiel au succès de leur outil de lutte est la détectiondes populations endémiques ou épidémiques du ravageur. Pour minimiser les pertes économiques liées àl'insecte, les efforts de lutte doivent être amorcés en conditions endémiques (i.e. faible densité de population del'AGF). Ces conditions échappent malheureusement aux outils actuellement utilisés pour dénombrer lesinsectes. Ce nouveau partenariat universitaire-industriel tire profit de l'expertise de GDG Environnement enentomologie et de l'INRS en écologie microbienne appliquée pour identifier des espèces de bactéries et dechampignons vivant en étroite relation avec l'AGF. Si l'hypothèse de l'équipe de recherche est validée, cesespèces permettront la mise en place d'un code à barre génomique pour déterminer la présence et la densité depopulation de l'AGF en analysant les bioaérosols en milieu urbain. Les retombées du projet seront crucialesconsidérant l'importance de la problématique de l'AGF au Canada et aux États-Unis. Cette collaborationrenforcera également la position de GDG comme un leader dans la lutte biologique contre les insectesravageurs.
