This project explores the use of use of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy to provide uniqueinsight into the changes of the composition of organic material in wastewater during treatment. NMRspectroscopy is a powerful analytical method to acquire molecular-level information regarding the compositionof complex organic mixtures in a non-selective and fully quantitative manner. The goal of this project is toexplore and develop to use of NMR data as a chemometric fingerprint to quickly estimate the biodegradabilityof the organic materials present in a waste stream and to identify potentially biologically toxic or inhibitorycompounds in the complex wastewater mixture. Improved knowledge of the composition of wastewaterinfluent based NMR analysis will help Hydromantis improve the quality of the data used to model wastewatertreatment processes, thereby allowing for improved designs and improved operation. Canada will benefit fromthis research through the development of models of wastewater treatment that will allow for the developmentof water treatment facilities that are more efficient in their use of energy and other resources and effective inremoving contamination from the environment.
