VueReal is a Waterloo-based company working on next-generation ultra-high resolution emissive displaysystems. More specifically, VueReal is developing a novel integration technique that enables the creation ofmicro-LED displays in a variety of structures and form factors suitable for a wide range of portable applicationssuch as cell-phones, head-up displays, pico-projectors, and smart watches as well as virtual reality (VR) andaugmented reality (AR) devices. The micro-LED display market is expected grow from the current $225M to$19.9B in 2025, a 54% compounded annual growth rate. VueReal is therefore positioned to establish aleadership role as a designer and manufacturer in this emerging market. However, VueReal is currently facing achallenge in that the efficiency of its LEDs decreases when device dimensions are reduced to few micrometers, the size scale required for micro-LED displays. The nature and causes of this efficiency droop in the small sizeLEDs is still unknown. In this project, Aziz's group at the University of Waterloo will work with VueReal tostudy and analyze the efficiency performance of its LEDs with the purpose of elucidating the factors behind theefficiency droop behaviour. The obtained knowledge will then be utilized for developing new device designand/or process flow that will mitigate this undesired effect. The collaboration will enable VueReal to solvethis problem, and thus create knowledge-based technology products that will enable Canadian manufacturers topenetrate the emerging market for augmented/virtual reality (AR/VR) displays for the consumer electronicsmarket. The successful outcome will produce a manufacturing capability based on existing micro-fabricationtechniques will create a transformational technology that can leverage existing Canadian infrastructure in theconsumer electronics sector.
