A helical pile is an innovative deep foundation type that has numerous advantages over conventional piles. Asthese advantages are realized in the foundation industry, this pile type is becoming increasingly common acrossCanada. Helical piles are now a preferred foundation solution for structures such as: low-rise commercial andresidential buildings, power transmission towers, and modular buildings. It is widely accepted that the soil disturbance caused by helical pile installation is less than that ofconventional piles; however little research has been conducted to quantify this difference or to determine itseffect on pile capacity. Due to this research gap, the short-term capacity reduction caused by installationdisturbance is difficult to predict and is often neglected. These deficiencies may lead to improper capacityestimations and under-design.Located in Leduc, Alberta, Twist Development Inc. (Twist) is a manufacturer of helical piles. It is importantto Twist, and the helical pile industry as a whole, that the understanding of helical pile installation effects isfurther investigated. The overall objective of the proposed research is to quantify the installation induced porepressure generation and its effect on the short-term capacity of helical piles. This research will lead to moreaccurate designs and greater confidence in this pile type across the foundation community.
