Dr. George will use and develop synchrotron X-ray techniques to provide unique insights into both the beneficial and the detrimental roles of heavy elements in the environment and human health. Specific themes include toxicity mechanisms of mercury and how they might be overcome, a palliative role for selenium in the large-scale chronic arsenic poisoning in Bangladesh, and copper in human health and disease. Additional studies will address the roles of functional metals such as molybdenum. The proposed work will advance our fundamental molecular understanding of heavy metal toxicity and has the potential for far-reaching impacts in world and Canadian health.
