An ergonomic investigation of a new hand grip driving aid**

The research project is a collaboration with Howell Venture, Ltd. (HLV), a leading company in the disabled driving aids market in both Canada and U.S.A. The driving aids are designed for individuals who have lost function one of their arms and still wish to drive their personal vehicle. The concern with current driving aids are the of lack ease of use, intuitiveness and comfort. The collaboration between HLV and the University of New Brunswick is to assess and help better understand the human-factor outcomes of using a hand Howell Ventures control while driving. Three different human-factor engineering designs hand controls will be investigated to address the biomechanical, postural and cognitive challenges associated with driving with hand controls, with the primary goal of determining which hand grip control requires the least amount of physical and cognitive demands while driving. The results of the study will inform new ergonomic design for hand grip control to help improve sitting posture and the reduction of muscular demands, discomfort, driving errors and cognitive demands. **
