Timber is widely used to construct elevated floors in buildings. Traditionally, light-frame, lumber-joisted floors**were synonymous with timber construction in North America and elsewhere, however newer options suit**construction of all timber- and hybrid-buildings taller than 4 stories. Cross-Laminated-Timber (CLT) is the**generic name for a class of prefabricated, thick timber-plate products well suited to construction of slab floors.**The attractiveness of CLT products is that they have low mass to stiffness and strength ratios. This provides**transportation and construction site handling advantages, and can lead to substantial cost savings for**superstructure and foundation systems. On the other hand, using CLT is not simply a matter of substituting one**material for another of equal strength or stiffness. Like other relatively lightweight slabs, CLT slabs potentially**increase a floor's proneness to vibration serviceability performance problems. Available CLT design guidelines**are limited when it comes to addressing the construction complexities such as floor detail, floor panel**properties, story level, and architectural parameters. The efforts proposed in this application will investigate the**effects of these parameters on the vibration characteristics of a number of benchmark CLT floors using in-situ**tests.**In this project, a series of on-site vibration tests will be performed on a variety of floor designs. In these**tests, an array of accelerometer sensors will be used to perform operational modal analysis of the panels. The**analysis results will be used to extract the floor's vibration frequencies, mode shapes, and damping ratios. This**project will help the industrial partner to better understand how their current practice in the design and**construction of CLT floors is performing; to determine whether their design approach is considering all the**important parameters; and to understand how they can better optimize their floor design and construction**considering the vibration serviceability criteria.
