We seek the acquisition of a thin film deposition system to support different major research activities in the field of surface science and materials engineering taking place at University of Montreal and Ecole Polytechnique. The researchers involved in this proposal have a long history of collaboration and a solid track record of scientific contributions in the areas of biosensing, bioanalytics, multifunctional coatings and biomaterials. An important part of our research, independently of its specific application, involves the fabrication of functional metallic surfaces with well controlled optical properties. This can only be achieved with a high quality deposition system specially customized to fabricate complex multicomponent films able to cover the whole spectrum of research activities lead by the different PIs gathered in this proposal. These research activities include the development of functional substrates and materials for super-lubrication and super-antifouling, the development of responsive nanofilms for next generation smart devices and responsive microfluidic devices, the fabrication of biofunctional surfaces for next generation medical devices, and finally the design and fabrication of plasmonic sensors for enhanced multifunctional imaging.***The acquisition of the proposed deposition system will not only facilitate access to the technique, it will enable the development and rapid testing of new substrates combining several elements and deposition patterns/structures. This is absolutely crucial for the future of our research program. **
