String theory is the most promising theory which unifies quantum mechanics with Einstein's theory of general relativity; furthermore, it has an incredibly rich structure with fascinating connections to many fundamental areas of pure mathematics. "Moonshine" refers to a collection of surprising relations between group theory and modular forms, fundamental objects in number theory, which appears to be deeply connected to string theory. This proposal aims to understand how these connections may lead to new mathematical theorems and elucidate new symmetry structures in string theory and quantum gravity.
