The recent advances in sensors and controls have enabled smart buildings and homes a rapidly growing market. Smart buildings**not only save energy, but help realize user comfort, well-being and improved productivity. Within the smart buildings, fenestration**controls are a critical sub component. The currently available intelligent window shades need external power and major**modifications to enable installation. Roll-A-Shade is developing a self-contained, self-powered intelligent window shade that can**be slot-in replaced for the legacy window shades. The associated smart phone application enables energy saving and**personalized user controls. RASs patent-pending configuration of solar power panel on the bottom rail of a shade allows for the**optimal harvesting of sunlight to achieve a fully self-powered motorized shade system. RAS will work with the University of Toronto**team to prototype the most cost effective, reliable and durable method to transfer energy between a solar powered rechargeable**battery and a tubular motor at a different location as well as to develop an improved smart phone control.
