Volatile organic compounds (VOC) and bioaerosols are the main causes of poor indoor quality. It**has been reported that the presence of VOC in an indoor environment increase the risk of cancer.**While bioaerosols could be reasons for health concerns such as allergic rhinitis. Hence lowering**the levels of VOC and bioaerosols within the built environment is an important necessity. Over**the past several years various mechanisms have been proposed for bioaerosol and VOC removal**from indoor environments.**Nanoscale photocatalyst based air purifying technologies have been popular in recent years. But**these technologies have the following deficiencies. Firstly, they have decreased efficiency in the**absence of a light source. Secondly, those technologies which are capable of functioning under**dark environment are composed of nanometals such as silver nanoparticle, which could be health**hazards if released accidentally. Thirdly, the technologies are expensive.**In this research project, copper doped titanium oxide will be prepared and tested to remove VOC**and bioaerosols from the indoor environment. Combining these two nanomaterials have the**following advantages. Firstly, it will help increase the purification efficiency of the photocatalyst.**Secondly, since copper has anti-bioaerosol nature it will be an additional force for removing**bioaerosols from the indoor environment. Thirdly, it also functions in a dark environment.**Fourthly, because copper is abundant relative to the other doping metals, the technology can be**commercialized at an affordable price. This research project can increase the competitive age of**the partnering company. The commercialization of the air the technology into the domestic and**international market will contribute to Canada's economy. Furthermore, this project will also be a**very useful career-oriented experience for students (HQP) involved in the project.
